SisterMonk

SisterMonk, an established NYC original band hailing from the Pacific Northwest, returns to Union Arts Center! SisterMonk’s music is female-powered, djembe-driven, rhythm-centric & culturally diverse. Soulful vocals, passionate rhythms, and authentic lyrics have gained the band solid fan base from coast to coast. Join a moving musical experience that is both introspective and celebratory!
The band performs regularly underground (as members of MTA’s Music Under New York program) and at various venues around New York City, such as Bowery Electric, The Mercury Lounge, and Rockwood Music Hall. They also tour nationally during festival season and have long been a favorite at Seattle ‘Folk Life’ and many more.
The band has recently been featured in The Village Voice for their performance in Make Music New York Festival. They also recently double billed with Gogol Bordello at the Space in Westbury, Long Island. SisterMonk has also shared the stage with such notable acts as Michael Franti & Spearhead, Anoushka Shankar, Mario Batali (at Greenspace NYNPR), Zap Mama and more.
“A joyful, sunny sound brimming with celestial ecstasy… There are world music inspirations in each song, lifting SisterMonk to the staggering heights of glam rock while dressed in hippie sensibilities.” -Hydrogen Jukebox
