For his show “Hudson Sublime,” Chris Reilly presents in Gallery 1 on the first floor, a series of paintings inspired by the Hudson River School artists, who, he says, “sought to portray the sublime in nature.” Working primarily in encaustic, an ancient medium comprising beeswax pigment and natural resins, his process begins with applying gesso to wood panel, then adding gouache before sealing with encaustic using a blowtorch. The heated tools and brushes serve to “emulate the growth and form of waterscapes that shape the landscape.” Reilly was raised in New City, NY, and received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has exhibited widely throughout the United States and currently lives and works in San Diego, CA. For more, see his Instagram at cgreilly2000.
